T&B’s Coated 38-40 Bullet in 40 S&W

The T&B coated 38-40 bullet is a great bullet for the 40 S&W. I load it over 5.1 grains of W231, Genix primers and Speer cases, to 1.125” OAL and finish with a firm crimp. Average for 5 shots is 1021 fps from a 4 ½” Springfield XDM. This is five of them from the bench, at 100 yards. Four went into five inches, but my low shot (in the circle) opened the group to 7 ½ inches. This is the best shooting coated bullet I’ve ever used.

My bulk reloads pull double duty as woods loads. I wanted to make sure this T&B 38-40 bullet would handle neck/spine shots on deer, straight-on shots for black bear or the big mean dogs that occasionally get dumped on our remote stretch of back road. I set up four gallons of water with scrap of 3/8 plywood between them, an old water-soaked Firearms News Annual behind that, another scrap of 3/8 plywood behind the book and a steel plate behind that. Looks like this-

A good center hit split the first jug wide open, blew the cap off the second and split it too. This bullet plowed through the rest of the jugs, wet magazine and backing plywood and was recovered on the 2×6 in front of the plate. Plenty of shredded plywood chips were poured out of the jugs that still had some water in them. I find it comforting this bullet bored a straight line, through considerable resistance, and still cut a clean, 40+ caliber hole in the wet magazine. Soft enough to bite bone, hard enough to penetrate- this is an excellent bullet for 40 S&W, 10mm or 38-40 handgun or rifle loads.
