Knob Noster Police Department Firearms Training Day
By Lt. Steve Sargent
KNPD conducts regular firearms training with the issue sidearm, shotgun and patrol rifle. On May 29th our In-Service Training included three hours of classroom instruction on the Department’s Use of Force and Firearms Policies along with Chapter 563 RSMo; and live-fire qualification with the issue Sig 556 Patrol Rifle. We are quite fortunate to have access to city-owned property with a 50 yard pistol range and 200 yard rife range. My sincere thanks to the City Maintenance Department for preparing the ranges for this event.
We are serious about marksmanship at KNPD and scored, 100 yard shooting from an improvised rest begins the rifle qualification process. This photo of Chief Kniskern, shooting his HBAR, provides the shooter’s perspective. He is an excellent shot by any standards.

The second component of the rifle qualification is standing, unsupported shooting at 50 yards. It requires strict adherence to the basics of marksmanship, to post a qualifying score. From the shooter’s perspective:

We also conduct close quarters training with the rifle.
I’ve been a Police Firearms Instructor since 1991, which makes me part of the ‘old school’ that still believes in stringent marksmanship requirements and scoring every shot. KNPD’s officers have met those challenges with enthusiasm and excellent proficiency. They have been a pleasure to train and I’d like to thank the Chief, Mayor, City Administrator and the Board of Aldermen for the opportunity and their ongoing support in that effort.
